Southwest University (SWU), located in the Beibei District of Chongqing Municipality, is a key comprehensive university directly affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education. It is included in the national “211 Project” and the Innovation Platform for Advanced Disciplines of the “985 Project”. With roots in the East Sichuan Normal School established in April 1906, SWU was officially founded in July 2005, by merging the former Southwest Normal University and Agricultural University of Southwest. With more than 100 years’ development, SWU has built up the image of “uniqueness in the Southwest and academy reaching the world” by integrating the rich natural and cultural diversity of the Southwest, cultivating practical and creative talents, enriching social welfare, and joining in the world’s development.

With the rich cultural background created by celebrities like Wu Mi, the master of Chinese culture, and Hou Guangjiong, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a pioneer of China’s soil science, SWU is now a hundred-year-old fascinating university. It currently comprises 44 master’s programs, 28 doctor’s programs, 22 postdoctoral research stations, 3 national key disciplines and 2 key disciplines with national support. The university is built with a national university science park, 1 national key lab, 1 national center for engineering research, 1 national center for engineering technology research, 1 national key lab cultivation base under joint construction by both the provincial government and the ministerial government, 10 key labs of the Ministry of Education or the Ministry Agriculture, 2 national field stations for scientific observation, 2 comprehensive experiment stations of the Ministry of Agriculture, 2 field bases of the Ministry of Land and Resources, 3 research centers of the Ministry of Education, 3 Talent Recruitment Innovation Base and 1 key research base for social science and humanity studies of the Ministry of Education.

Among its 2,900 faculty members, there are 1 CAS member, 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 15 professors in the national “One Thousand Talents Plan”, 13 “Cheung Kong scholars”, 2 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 chief scientists of the national “973” research Projects, and 15 professors in “BaiQianWan Talents Program”. The university undertook more than 900 national research projects in the past five years. According to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), SWU has 6 subject areas (Chemistry, Botany & zoology, Agricultural Science, Material Science, Engineering and Biology & Biochemistry) ranked among the global top 1%.
