The Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) is an interdisciplinary research centre of the University of Luxembourg. We conduct fundamental and translational research in the field of Systems Biology and Biomedicine – in the lab, in the clinic and in silico. We focus on neurodegenerative processes and are especially interested in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and their contributing factors. For over a decade, we have developed our expertise in several fields – from genetics to metaproteomics, from enzymology to immunology, from computational biology to cheminformatics – to tackle the growing issue represented by neurodegenerative diseases worldwide. We want to further our understanding of the human brain and improve care for patients in Luxembourg and beyond.
Interdisciplinarity is key
We strongly believe that complex problems can only be solved when the best minds from different disciplines and cultures come together and form a team. The LCSB recruits talented scientists from various disciplines: join the mix of computer scientists, mathematicians, biologists, chemists, engineers, physicists and clinicians from more than 50 countries. We excel because we are truly interdisciplinary and together we contribute to science and society.
Are you fascinated by the complexity of the brain? Do you want to decipher its mechanisms to better prevent and treat neurodegeneration? Do you strive for excellence and believe in interdisciplinary collaboration? 3x YES – then join our team!
Excellent work environment
In the south of Luxembourg, close to neighbouring France, Belgium and Germany, new architecture and the country’s history combine into an innovative campus. Scientists find a state-of-the-art infrastructure that is constantly evolving. At the LCSB, six scientific platforms offer services to all our researchers. Be it imaging, omics, data science or animal models – we have experts and equipment in house.
Here, researchers can concentrate fully on their science: Lab support as well as administrative staff relieve LCSB’s scientists of many tasks. We also value our dynamic corporate company culture, so be prepared for teambuilding events, networking activities and more.
Every day at the LCSB and in Luxembourg is truly international. Our 250 staff have joined us from all around the world, creating a rich and multicultural environment. The LCSB actively encourages researchers to visit international conferences, to join European and global consortia, and of course to invite collaborators to Luxembourg!
Truly connected
The LCSB cooperates closely with hospitals and healthcare professionals. We receive invaluable input from medical doctors and clinical researchers in many fields like neurology, pathology and neurosurgery. Their contribution is essential for the development of interventional therapies or new biomarker-based diagnostic tools and for testing their effectiveness in the clinic.
We have established strategic partnerships with leading biomedical laboratories worldwide and with all major biological and medical research units in Luxembourg. The LCSB fosters collaboration with industrial partners as well and promotes the translation of fundamental research results into clinical applications.
The connection between science and society is very important to us. From our school lab – the Scienteens Lab – to the different outreach activities and collaborative partnerships with patient associations, we love to listen to society’s needs and share our passion for science. Research at the LCSB is truly connected in many different ways.
LCSB, the place to be for your PhD
We teach interdisciplinarity to the young generations of scientists from day one. Most PhD students are part of Doctoral Training Units: groups of students from diverse fields, all working together on an overarching research topic.
Thanks to a high ratio of academics and post-docs to doctoral candidates, PhD students can benefit from supervision of our internationally recognised experts and additional guidance from colleagues with various levels of experience. Besides high-quality research training, the Doctoral School of Science and Engineering offers complementary training to complete knowledge and skills required for their career development.
The learning doesn’t stop there: pick one of the University’s many free science and soft skill courses, learn a new language or join the free university sports and arts program!
Outstanding Benefits
The university offers a competitive salary package, over six weeks of paid leave and 11 days of public holidays. Family is important to us: staff members can benefit from maternity and parental leave, plus 40 hours of personal time off each year to facilitate private appointments when needed. Luxembourg provides free public schools (including several public international schools) and after-school care as well as subsidised day care for smaller children.
You also benefit from top-notch health insurance. Every university employee is automatically enrolled in the national health scheme (CNS), offering coverage in Luxembourg and in the EU. You will also benefit from travel insurance both for your personal and professional trips. Public transportation is free in Luxembourg!
The university offers some subsidised housing units for doctoral researchers. You also receive meal vouchers and a discount on your meals at university restaurants.
