Fresh entrants from across the world appear in the Nature Index 2016 annual tables. Of the 16 institutions that made it into the top 500 for the first time, five are from China, three from the United States and two from Italy. Seven countries welcome one new institution into the tables. A relatively new institution, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen, China, has moved up the ranks to the 421st place in a matter of five years. The chemistry-strong university has ambitious plans to become a world-leading institution by 2049.

Two companies also make an appearance: Pfizer Inc., based in the United States, and AstraZeneca plc, based in the United Kingdom.
