But fundamental questions about how cognitive function emerges from patterns of brain activity remain unsolved, which limits treatment options for neurological conditions. As large-scale neuroscience initiatives in some countries wind down, enthusiasm for cutting-edge implantable devices is ramping up, and time will tell if the United States' lead in this area can be challenged.
