Announcements

  • Nature Sustainability has turned five. In order to celebrate our anniversary we have put together four exciting Collections covering three topical research areas -water, emerging technologies and nature-based solutions- as well as a cross-cutting theme, inequality.

  • Anna Berti Suman is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). She is the principal researcher of the Sensing for Justice (SensJus) project, which explores the applications of civic environmental monitoring for environmental justice.

  • Since it was launched in 2018, the editorial team at Nature Sustainability has seen the level and quality of submissions grow steadily. But high submissions also carry a price as the journal’s editorial capacity cannot grow at the same pace. As a result, editors have reconsidered some editorial practices.

Nature Sustainability is a Transformative Journal; authors can publish using the traditional publishing route OR via immediate gold Open Access.

Our Open Access option complies with funder and institutional requirements.

    • Siloed exploitation, management and planning of the oceans have resulted in escalating damage to ocean biodiversity and conflicts among users. A study now provides a set of principles to ensure participation and inclusion of all rights-holders and stakeholders towards transformative ocean governance to enable sustainability.

    • Contemporary plastics upcycling methods rely on the use of hydrogen and solvents, which make the process not environmentally friendly. Now a solvent- and hydrogen-free strategy can convert high-density polyethylene into separable hydrocarbons with high efficiency.

    • Rangelands provide critical ecosystem and societal services and are central to livestock husbandry across the United States. How these considerations are balanced, and possibly expanded on, will shape the future of rangeland ecosystems and communities moving into the future.

    • Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical produced in large quantities for use primarily in the manufacturing of plastics. However, its adverse effects on human health are driving the development of safer and more sustainable alternatives. Now, a synthetic route enables such an alternative, starting from renewable lignin biomass.

  • Media attention to the disastrous consequences of this summer’s wildfires has been at a record high. Now the world should wake up to the urgent need to restore burnt sites.

    Editorial
  • Principles underpinning the 2030 Agenda — indivisibility, integration and universality — can safeguard against inaction or unsustainable practices but have not yet come into effect. We propose measures to strengthen alignment with them as the world gears up to accelerate implementation at the 2023 SDG Summit.

  • This season’s wildfires have wreaked havoc for local communities, summer tourists and densely populated cities more than 1,000 km away. International cooperation is urgently needed to ensure humans’ sustainable future with increasing wildfires.

    Editorial
  • Freshwaters require targeted policy considerations to achieve biodiversity conservation goals and to support ecosystem services that communities around the globe depend upon. Effective conservation requires creative solutions that build and expand upon conventional protected areas, contextualized for these diverse ecosystems.
