Nature Reviews Bioengineering is a new online-only journal for the publication of Reviews, Perspectives and Comments in all scientific disciplines within bioengineering. The journal will launch in January 2023.
Our Reviews are balanced and objective analyses of the selected topic — with descriptions of relevant scientific literature and discussions that are easy to grasp for recent graduates in any bioengineering-related discipline, as well as informing principal investigators, clinicians and industry-based research scientists of the latest advances. Reviews should provide the authors' insight into future directions and their opinion of the major challenges faced by researchers in the field.
Our Perspectives — as the name suggests — take a look at a topic from a slightly different angle. They may offer more personal viewpoints, explain the historical background to a topic, or discuss some of the social, ethical or environmental factors related to bioengineering in academia and industry.
Our Comments are agenda-setting, authoritative, informed and often provocative expert pieces calling for action on topical issues pertaining to scientific research and/or its political, ethical and social ramifications. Comments are generally not peer reviewed, and we encourage authors to express their opinions.
Reviews, Perspectives and Comments are commissioned by the editorial team.
Aims & scope
We are interested in the latest advances in bioengineering and in timely syntheses of research spanning all its aspects, with a particular focus on application, translation and technology, that is, leveraging biological knowledge to engineer solutions for real-world applications. The wider societal relevance of bioengineering will also be featured within the journal. We seek to amplify diverse voices, provide a platform for discussion, debate and solution, and publish pieces that discuss commercial, ethical, legal and societal aspects of bioengineering research, and the translation of bioengineering advances in low-resource settings. Our broad scope and accessible formats ensure that work published in our journal reaches the widest possible audience.
Nature Reviews Bioengineering is an exclusively online-only publication. Articles are published using an Advanced Online Publication process, giving our authors an earlier publication date and allowing our readers to access papers several weeks before they appear in a specific issue. Note that papers published online are definitive and may be altered only through the publication of an Addendum or Correction, so authors should make every effort to ensure that the page proofs are correct.
We publish a range of content types, including Reviews, Perspectives, Comments, Down to Business, Viewpoints, Q&As and Correspondences that elaborate on significant advances in the field and cover topical issues.
How we work
Our team of in-house editors, art editors, production editors and proofreaders work together with authors to produce authoritative, accessible, high-quality articles; see a visual summary of the editorial process.
While the majority of content (see below for content types) in Nature Reviews Bioengineering will be commissioned by our editors, we do welcome proposals.
Editors and contact information
Like the other Nature titles, Nature Reviews Bioengineering has no external editorial board. Instead, all editorial decisions are made by a dedicated team of full-time professional editors. For information on their research backgrounds and scientific interests, see About the Editors.
