For our fifth anniversary, we reconnected with authors of recent Comments and Perspectives in Nature Machine Intelligence and asked them how the topic they wrote about developed. We also wanted to know what other topics in AI they found exciting, surprising or worrying, and what their hopes and expectations are for AI in 2024—and the next five years. A recurring theme is the ongoing developments in large language models and generative AI, their transformative effect on the scientific process and concerns about ethical implications.

For a third year in a row, we followed up with authors of several recent Comments and Perspectives in Nature Machine Intelligence about what happened after their article was published: how did the topic they wrote about develop, did they gain new insights, and what are their hopes and expectations for AI in 2022?

We invited authors of selected Comments and Perspectives published in Nature Machine Intelligence in the latter half of 2019 and first half of 2020 to describe how their topic has developed, what their thoughts are about the challenges of 2020, and what they look forward to in 2021.

There is no shortage of opinions on the impact of artificial intelligence and deep learning. We invited authors of Comment and Perspective articles that we published in roughly the first half of 2019 to look back at the year and give their thoughts on how the issue they wrote about developed.
