Initial submission and presubmission enquiries
For information about the journal, please refer to our Frequently Asked Questions. For a description of the first steps of the submission process please see Initial submission. All submissions should include a cover letter, a manuscript file and optional supplementary information files, and should be made via our manuscript tracking system. Using this system, authors can upload manuscript files (text, figures and supplementary information, including video) and check on the status of their manuscript.
For a description of the types of contributions that may be submitted to the journal, along with their length and figure limits, please see Content types. The journal's initial and final format requirements are described below.
Brief guidelines for preparing initial submissions
Nature Biomedical Engineering is flexible with regards to the format of original submissions. The Editor strongly recommends:
- Lay out figures (and panels within figures) for optimal visibility when printed on A4 paper. Each figure, along with is legend, should fit within an A4. Please consider whether each figure should be laid out in the one-column (half-page width) or two-column (full-page width) formats.
- Place the figures along the text (rather than at the end, so as to facilitate readability for editors and potentially by external peer reviewers), and submit the manuscript as one single file. Please include any Supplementary Information (but for movies and other secondary content) at the end of the same file, unless the overall file size exceeds 30 MB.
- For Articles, please stay within the limit of 3,500 words of body text (this excludes Abstract, Methods, References, tables, and figure legends) and 8 display items. Review Articles and Perspectives should not extend beyond 6,000 words and 8 display items. Comments are limited to 2,000 words. Exceptions to word-count limits can be granted by the Editor on a case-by-case basis. For more information on content types and formatting requirements, please see Content types.
Please submit via our manuscript tracking system.
Presubmission enquiries can alternatively be sent by e-mail to nBME@nature.com, to the attention of the Editor. Presubmission enquiries are not required, and the editors cannot make an absolute commitment to consider a contribution for publication before assessing the full submission (which should not be sent as a presubmission enquiry but be formally submitted through the journal's manuscript tracking system). The editors will aim to provide you with an answer within five working days.
Revisions should be uploaded via the link provided in the editor's decision letter. Please do not submit revisions as new manuscripts.
Authors should be familiar with the format requirements for final submission and begin revising their manuscript to fit these requirements. This will reduce later publication delays in the event that the editor decides to offer publication of a suitably revised manuscript.
If the editor offers publication of a suitably revised manuscript, the authors will be asked to revise their manuscript as needed to satisfy our final formatting requirements.
