Honorary Editor-in-Chief

Jianlin Cao, China

Jianlin Cao is Professor in Optics and former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. He graduated from the Department of Physics at Fudan University in 1982, and obtained his PhD degree from the joint-training program at the Changchun Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (CIOFM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Tohoku University in Japan in 1989. From 1989 to 1992, he undertook postdoctoral research at CIOFM, later working as a research professor, supervisor of PhD students, Executive Deputy Director (legal representative) and Director of CIOFM, as well as Director of the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics. He served as an assistant to the President of CAS, head of the preparatory CAS Opto-Electronics Group, and President of the CAS Academy of Opto-Electronics. In January 2005, he was nominated for Vice President of CAS, President of the CAS Academy of Opto-Electonics, and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Applied Optics. In September 2006, he was appointed as Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the journal Optics and Precision Engineering and holds editorial positions with several other academic journals.

Cao has been working in the area of soft x-ray multilayer technology research and has received recognition both domestically in China and internationally for his outstanding achievements. He received first grade awards for young scientists from CAS in 1995 and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China in 1997.

Xi-Cheng Zhang, United States

Prof. Xi-Cheng Zhang is Endowed Parker Givens Professor of Optics, at The Institute of Optics, University of Rochester, NY, a foremost institution in optics and optical physics research and education, since March 2012. He was the director of the institute from 2012 to 2017. Prior to joining UR, he pioneered world-leading research in the field of ultrafast laser-based terahertz technology and optical physics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy NY (‘92-‘12). At RPI, he is the Eric Jonsson Professor of Science; Acting Head at the Department of Physics, Applied Physics & Astronomy; Professor of Electrical, Computer & System; and Founding Director of the Center for THz Research. He is co-founder of Zomega Terahertz Corp. With a BS (‘82) from Peking University, he earned the MS (‘83) and PhD degree (‘86) in Physics from Brown University, RI.

Yun-Feng Xiao, China 

Dr. Yun-Feng Xiao, distinguished “Boya” Professor at Peking University. He received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from University of Science and Technology of China in 2002 and 2007, respectively. After a postdoctoral research at Washington University in St. Louis, he joined the faculty of Peking University in the January of 2009. His research interests lie in the fields of whispering-gallery microcavity optics and photonics. So far, he has authored or co-authored more than 150 refereed journal papers with over 5000 citations, and has delivered over 100 invited talks/seminars in international/national conferences. He was awarded the Wang Daheng Optics Prize in 2018, the Rao-Yutai Prize in physics in 2019, and the Rao-Yutai Prize in Fundamental Optics in 2013. He was elected as OSA fellow in 2018.

 

Co-Executive Editors-in-Chief

Ping Jia, China

Ping Jia is a professor in Optics, the president of Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP), a well-known expert in aviation optoelectronic reconnaissance and the innovation team leader in key areas of the national innovative talent promotion plan. He received his master’s degree from University of Science and Technology of China in 1988 and Ph.D. degree from University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2006. He held research position in CIOMP since 1988. From 1994 to 1995, he has been a scholar to University of Florence, Italy. From 1994-1998, he has been the deputy director of the aviation optical laboratory at CIOMP. In January 2015, he was appointed as the president of CIOMP.

As principle investigator, he has completed numbers of national research projects including National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), and won the National Science and Technology Progress Award twice (first and second prize). He is also the editorial board chairman of the journal Optics and Precision Engineering. Prof. Jia has been engaged in aerospace optoelectronic imaging technology more than 20 years. He published over 49 scientific papers in journals and prestigious conferences. Also, he holds more than 19 patents.

Hongbo Sun, China

Hong-Bo Sun, currently the Changjiang-Scholar professor of optical engineering at Tsinghua University, China. He received the B.S. and the PhD degrees in electronics from Jilin University, Changchun, China, in 1992 and 1996, respectively. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Satellite Venture Business Laboratory, the University of Tokushima, Japan, from 1996 to 2000, and then as an assistant professor in Department of Applied Physics, Osaka University, Japan. In 2004, he was promoted as a full professor (Changjiang Scholar) in Jilin University, and since 2017 he has been working in Tsinghua University. His research interests have been focused on ultrafast optoelectronics, particularly on laser nanofabrication and ultrafast spectroscopy: Fabrication of various micro-optical, microelectronical, micromechanical, micro-optoelectronic, microfluidic components and their integrated systems at nanoscale, and exploring ultrafast dynamics of photons, electrons, phonons, and surface plasmons in solar cells, organic light-emitting devices and low-dimensional quantum systems at femtosecond timescale. So far, he has published over 400 scientific papers in the above fields, which have been cited for nearly 15000 times with an impact factor of 60 according to ISI search report. He is IEEE, OSA, SPIE, and COS fellow.

Luc Thévenaz, Switzerland

Luc Thévenaz received the M.Sc. degree and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. In 1988 he joined the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL) where he currently leads a research group involved in photonics, namely fiber optics and optical sensing. Research topics include fiber sensors, slow & fast light, nonlinear fiber optics and laser spectroscopy in gases. His expertise covers all applications of stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers and he is known for his innovative concepts related to distributed fiber sensing.

During his career he stayed at Stanford University, at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), at Tel Aviv University, at the University of Sydney and at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. In 2000 he co-founded the company Omnisens that is developing and commercializing advanced photonic instrumentation based on distributed fiber sensing.

He was member of the Consortium in the FP7 European Project GOSPEL "Governing the speed of light", was Chairman of the European COST Action 299 "FIDES: Optical Fibres for New Challenges Facing the Information Society" and is now Coordinator of the H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks FINESSE (FIbre NErve Systems for Sensing). He is member of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on Optical Fiber Sensors and General Chairman of this conference in 2018. He has served in the Technical Committee of several conferences, such as ECOC, CLEO-Europe, APC, etc. He is Fellow of both the IEEE and the Optical Society.

Andreas Tünnermann, Germany

Prof. Andreas Tünnermann, affiliated with the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering, enjoys an excellent reputation in the laser physics community, and is currently leading one of the most creative and productive laser research groups in the world. The research interests of Andreas Tünnermann are focused on fundamental principles as well as sophisticated technical aspects and applications associated with the tailoring of light. He has a unique combination of considerable experience in the development of continuous-wave and pulsed solid-state lasers, including waveguide lasers, and profound knowledge of nonlinear optics in waveguide structures and volume-optical media. This blend of experience and knowledge has attracted considerable attention and manifests itself in more than 650 peer-reviewed publications in reputable journals, in addition to more than 250 invited talks including plenary talks and tutorials at prestigious national and international conferences (h-index: 78). In addition, he is inventor or co-inventor of more than 20 granted patents/applied patents in the field of photonics.

Shuang Zhang, China 

Prof. Shuang Zhang is currently a chair professor in the Department of Physics and the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering at the University of Hong Kong,China. He received the B.S. and the M.S. in Physics from Jilin University, Changchun China and Northeastern University, USA, respectively, and the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois Urbana & Champaign, from 2005 to 2006, and at the University of California Berkeley, from 2006 to 2010. He joined the University of Birmingham in 2010. He moved to the University of Hong Kong in 2020.

Prof. S Zhang’s research focuses on metamaterials, artificially engineered photonic structures for manipulating the propagation of electromagnetic waves. He pioneered negative index metamaterials at optical frequencies with the so called “fishnet” plasmonic structures. His current research focuses on metasurfaces and topological photonics. His group has developed geometric phase based metasurfaces for various applications such as lenses, holography and generation of structured light beams. His group demonstrated continuous control over the nonlinearity phase by extending the concept of geometric phase to nonlinear optics for harmonic generations. His recent research on topological metamaterials has led to observation of ideal Weyl points, photonic chiral zero modes, three-dimensional photonic Dirac degeneracies and non-abelian nodal links. He was the recipient of 2010 IUPAP award in Optics for his pioneering work on optical metamaterials. In 2016, he received a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, and became a fellow of the Optical Society of America.

Tianhong Cui, USA

Dr. Tianhong Cui is currently a Distinguished McKnight University Professor at the University of Minnesota. He is a Professor in Mechanical Engineering and an Affiliate Senior Member of the graduate faculty in Department of Electrical Engineering and Department of Biomedical Engineering. He joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 2003. From 1995 to 2003, he held research or faculty positions at Tsinghua University, University of Minnesota, National Laboratory of Metrology in Japan, and Louisiana Tech University. He is an Adjunct Professor at Mayo Clinic and a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge. He is a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME).

His current research interests include MEMS and nanotechnology. He has more than 330 archived publications in scientific journals and prestigious conferences. He received awards including the STA & NEDO Fellowships in Japan, the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship in Germany, the Research Foundation Award from Louisiana Tech University, the Richard & Barbara Endowed Chair and the Distinguished McKnight University Professorship from the University of Minnesota, the Distinguished Visiting Professorship from University of Paris East, the Distinguished Visiting Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering in UK, the Outstanding Editor Award from Chinese Academy of Sciences/ Nature Publishing Group, and numerous best paper awards. He is the founding Executive Editor-in-Chief for two Nature journals, Light: Science & Applications and Microsystems & Nanoengineering. He is also serving as the founding Editor-in-Chief for the first AAAS/Science Partner Journal titled Research.

Stefan Kaierle, Germany

Stefan Kaierle studied electrical engineering and pursued with his PhD in mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University. In 1998 he entered the Fraunhofer ILT as a department head for system technology. In 2012, he moved to Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) and assumed responsibility for the department of Materials and Processes. In the same year he became lecturer at the Leibniz University of Hannover LUH. Since 2018, Stefan Kaierle is Executive Board Member of the LZH.

Stefan Kaierle published more than 300 scientific papers in journals and conferences. Also, he holds more than 10 patents. He had been appointed to two guest professorships at Changchun University (in 2005) and at Beijing University of Technology (in 2007), China. He has been the President of the European Laser Institute (ELI) for 10 years (2003-2013) and since 2013 he is member of the Board of Directors of the Laser Institute of America (LIA). Since 2014 he is Member of the Board of Stakeholders of the European Technology Platform Photonics 21. Besides numerous committee involvements he has been chairman and board member of many international conferences. Since 2011 he is Executive Editor in Chief of the SPRINGER NATURE Journal LIGHT: Science & Applications. His academic achievements have been honored by the Laser Institute of America (Fellow), the European Laser Institute (Fellow) and the CIOMP, Chinese Academy of Sciences (Honorary Professor).
