Excitatory cholinergic nerves (ACh) and the tonic myogenic property of the LES favor contraction, whereas the inhibitory nitrergic (NO) pathway favors inhibition. The LES remains contracted owing to its myogenic property when it is completely denervated as in advanced achalasia.
