Ivan M. Lang received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Temple University with Martin F. Tansy where he investigated the role of the amygdala in blood pressure control and the mechanisms of secretion of the Brunner's glands. His interest in neurophysiology led to his obtaining a NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship with Charles D. Barnes at the Physiology Department of Texas Technical University Medical School to continue further studies of the central control of blood pressure. Ivan then joined the Surgery Department of the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and the Zablocki VA Medical Center with Sushil K. Sarna to study the neural control of digestive tract motility with special interest in the control of intestinal motility in chronically instrumented animals. Ivan's laboratory, funded by VA grants, investigated the neural control of emesis. Ivan then joined the Department of Medicine at MCW and became the Director of Animal Research in the laboratories of Wylie J. Dodds, Walter J. Hogan and then Reza Shaker where he began his investigations of the neural mechanisms of swallowing, esophagus, and the upper esophageal sphincter. Ivan obtained his DVM degree from the University of Wisconsin Veterinary Medical School in 1996. Today, Ivan's main research interest is the central control of digestive tract function.
