Marion Nestle
What is your current position and what are your current work commitments?
I am the Paulette Goddard Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University. Although I retired in 2017, I am still teaching classes in food systems policy and politics (especially related to the Coronavirus pandemic), writing a daily blog, and working on book manuscripts.
What are your favoured areas of research? What made you choose these areas?
I research and write about food politics, particularly food industry strategies and tactics to influence what people eat.
Is there a research paper from EJCN (2018-2019) that you are particularly pleased with? What were the major conclusions? How do you think it will progress our thinking in nutrition/ public health/ medical practice?
A food lover’s love of nutrition science, policy, and politics
Has research funding become easier or more difficult over the last decade?
I learned early on that I needed to find an area of research that did not require external funding, or at least not much.
Do you feel our established journals meeting the present and future demands of nutrition, public health and biomedical sciences?
I see the biggest challenge as loss of trust in nutrition science, due in part to the increasing proportion of research funded by food companies for marketing purposes, and in part to the proliferation of journals willing to publish research aimed at marketing rather than science.
