The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was set up with the aim of preserving biological diversity. One part of that goal is to implement fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources, which after 10 years of deliberations finally took shape in the agreement of the Nagoya Protocol last October1. The first meeting of the CBD's Intergovernmental Committee for The Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization took place in Montreal from June 6–10. This meeting discussed several recommendations for implementing the Nagoya Protocol, including the operation of the Access and Benefit-sharing Clearinghouse; capacity building and development and human and institutional capacities in developing countries; and cooperative procedures and institutional mechanisms to promote compliance with the Protocol and address cases of noncompliance.
