This tension improves HSE characteristics and promotes skin homeostasis.     Amanda Melin et al. compare variation in 29 primate species at 12 amino acid residue sites coded by the ACE2 gene and show that apes and African and Asian monkeys exhibit the same set of twelve key amino acid residues as human ACE2. These results suggest that these primates are likely to be susceptible to SARS-CoV-2, whereas ACE2 gene sequences and protein-protein interaction models suggest reduced susceptibility for platyrrhines, tarsiers, lorisoids, and some lemurs.

    Yubero et al. report a close connection between energy metabolism and cell stiffness in breast cancer cells, finding that healthy cell stiffness is based on ATP-driven actin polymerization, whereas in metastatic cells it is based on ATP-driven myosin II activity.     Mitchell et al. use Bayesian network inference to observe the effects of the removal of key taxa on Antarctic benthic community dynamics and find that the removal of sponges results in the dramatic reduction in abundance of all major taxa. These models show how the consideration of community dynamics has implications for ecosystem management.

    Manon Penco-Campillo, Yannick Comoglio et al. show that VEGFC decreases the proliferation and migration of medulloblastoma cells, as well as their ability to form pseudo vessels. Cells expressing high levels of VEGFC also form smaller tumors when subcutaneously injected into the flank of nude mice, thus highlighting a negative regulatory role for VEGFC on tumor growth.

    Yukiko Inagaki-Kawata et al. report an analysis of germline variants in breast cancer susceptibility genes in 1,995 Japanese breast cancer patients. They find that 5.1% of the patients carry germline variants in cancer-linked genes and investigate the characteristics of patients with germline mutations in BRCA1/2.

    Zonderland et al discover that fibroblasts and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) differ in their response to bFGF when grown on microfibrillar substrates. They find that MSCs cultured on this substrate leads to reduced FGFR levels, as does inhibition of actomyosin contractility or MRT/SRF, suggesting mechanosensitive control of FGFR.

    Dai et al. report the identification and characterization of a new isoform of RhoE (RhoEα), a member of the Rho GTPase family, which is generated from the same gene by alternative translation initiation at the downstream ATG codon 46. Compared to RhoE, RhoEα does not differ in the subcellular localization but has increased protein stability and distinct molecular signalling profile.

    Qin Wang et al. show that altered phosphate metabolism contributes to the progression of kidney disease using a salt-sensitive rat model. They demonstrate that using the phosphate binder sucroferric oxyhydroxide reduces kidney injury and, using transcriptome sequencing, identify a potential role for complement C1q in kidney inflammation linked to phosphate metabolism defects.
