Protocol Review
In the United States, research with vertebrate animals is overseen by an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), in accordance with the US Animal Welfare Act and Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Members of the IACUC review, approve, and monitor animal research activities at their institution.
Each month, Lab Animal poses a hypothetical protocol review scenario and invites readers to share how they would respond, with additional guidance often provided by the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) and USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).
