Evolution of Plant Mating Systems: Homomorphic Self-incompatibility

Papers appearing in Heredity have made an important contribution to the understanding of plant mating system evolution. While this includes a wide range of topics, this virtual collection focuses on papers that have advanced understanding of the evolution of genetically controlled self-incompatibility systems. Heredity has published over 300 papers related specifically to this subject, which together have attracted over 10,000 citations. Here we focus on homomorphic systems, starting with seminal work by Daniel Lewis (Heredity 1, 85-108).  Other key researchers who contributed ideas prior to the late 1980s include Leslie Crowe, Angus Bateman, Kenneth Thompson, Brian Charlesworth, Deborah Charlesworth, Mikhail Nasrallah, June Nasrallah, Janis Antonovics, Kamla Pandey, David J. Ockendon, Michael J Lawrence, Takeshi Nishio and there have been many more recent researchers. We thus provide only a flavour of the development of the field through Heredity but encourage you to search more through the archives.
