Algae are a polyphyletic group of eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms, ranging from unicellular microalgae to macroalgae the size of trees, characterised by the absence of morphological features typically found in vascular plants. They are capable of absorbing large volumes of CO2 and have a high bioremediation potential, thus have been regarded by many as important elements in the fight against anthropogenic pollution and climate change. Additionally, algae have emerged as sustainable sources of biofuel, bioplastics, and compounds widely used in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries, like agar and carrageenans.
This collection invites original research on the biology, ecology, conservation and biotechnology of algae, and aims to contribute to the increasing exploration of these organisms towards a sustainable environment.
