Algae are a polyphyletic group of eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms, ranging from unicellular microalgae to macroalgae the size of trees, characterised by the absence of morphological features typically found in vascular plants. They are capable of absorbing large volumes of CO2 and have a high bioremediation potential, thus have been regarded by many as important elements in the fight against anthropogenic pollution and climate change. Additionally, algae have emerged as sustainable sources of biofuel, bioplastics, and compounds widely used in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries, like agar and carrageenans.
This collection invites original research on the biology, ecology, conservation and biotechnology of algae, and aims to contribute to the increasing exploration of these organisms towards a sustainable environment.

Diego Gomez-Casati a Professor at National University of Rosario, and a Researcher at the National Research Council (CONICET), both in Argentina. His major research interest is related to plant and algae energetic metabolism, CAZY enzymes structure-function studies, as well as starch and mitochondrial metabolism. Dr Gomez-Casati has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2022.
Mathieu Pernice is Deputy Director and Associate Professor at the University of Technology Sydney. His main research interests are based around the aims to transform fossil based systems into sustainable biomanufacturing, using algae to progress Australia's Bioeconomy (Algal Biosystems and Biotechnology team), and to develop and implement sublethal markers of stress for seagrass and coral reef monitoring (Seagrass Health team and collaborative work with Future Reefs team ). Dr Pernice has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.
Thierry Tonon is a Lecturer in Algal Biology at the University of York. His academic interests include algal physiology and metabolism, biotechnological applications of algae and algal genes, and valorisation of algal biomass. Dr Thierry Tonon has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.
