Cancer microbiome

Our understanding of the interaction between environment, microbiome, and disease processes has evolved rapidly in recent years. We’re increasingly aware that what we eat and where we live can have an effect on our microbiome, and that this in turn can affect our bodies. Early indications suggest that in disease processes, such as those of tumor formation and metastasis, the interactions between the microbiome and the body are likely to have important effects. Nevertheless, many of the details and mechanisms of these interactions are still unclear.

This collection invites submissions which shed more light on the interaction between cancers and the microbiome.

Hani El-Nezami is the Associate Director of Molecular and Cell Biology Area at the University of Hong Kong and a Professor of Gut Health and Food Safety at the University of Eastern Finland. His research interests include modulation of gut microbiota by dietary means and how such modulation contributes to disease prevention, development and progression. Prof El-Nezami has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.

Kaitlin H. Wade is a Lecturer of Epidemiology at the University of Bristol. Dr Wade and her team focus on the appropriate application of causal inference methods, including the use of comprehensive longitudinal cohorts, randomized controlled trials and Mendelian randomization, in understanding the causal role played by the human gut microbiome on cancer etiology and other related health outcomes. Dr Wade has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.
