Across the blood-brain barrier

The central nerve system (CNS) plays a crucial central regulatory role in mammalian life, and the blood-brain barrier is the most selective physical barrier protecting the brain by strictly controlling the entry of specific nutrients from the periphery into the CNS and by restricting the passage of deleterious exogenous molecules (e.g., neurotoxicants) to maintain CNS homeostasis. Recently, BBB has been demonstrated as a dynamic active interface instead of a steady barrier between blood and parenchyma in the brain. However, the tight protection poses a major challenge to the therapeutic and interventional process in CNS diseases.

Aiming to facilitate brain therapeutics, this collection is open to original research across all aspects of BBB study, spanning BBB molecular and structural basis, BBB models, invasive or non-invasive approaches for enhancing delivery efficiency to the brain, and innovative translational or clinical therapeutics including chemo drugs, nucleic acids, proteins, antibodies, and cells. In particular, we welcome specific topics including but not limited to in vitro BBB models, nose-to-brain delivery, invasive brain delivery approaches, advanced materials such as extracellular vesicles, lipid vehicles, and nanoparticles, as well as effective treatments against CNS diseases such as neurodegenerative disease, aging, tumor, brain infection, neuroinflammation, stroke, epilepsy, and brain injury.

Submitting a paper for consideration

To submit your manuscript for consideration at Scientific Reports as part of this Collection, please follow the steps detailed on this page. On the first page of our online submission system, under “I’m submitting:” select the option “any other article type”. Once logged in you can submit your manuscript to a Collection by selecting “Guest Edited Collection”, under the “Choose the appropriate manuscript type” message, and clicking “Continue”. Then when filling out the manuscript information, select the "Across the blood-brain barrier" Collection from the alphabetical list on the “Springer Nature Subject Category” tab. Authors should express their interest in the Collection in their cover letter.

Accepted papers are published on a rolling basis as soon as they are ready.

In addition to papers on Across the blood-brain barrier, Scientific Reports welcomes all original research in the field of Biological sciences. To browse our latest articles in Biological sciences click here.
