Marine organisms are facing a barrage of pollution created by human activities. Plastic enters the ocean and degrades into easily-ingested microplastic particles, the effects of which are only just being fully understood. Pesticides contribute to the number of low oxygen ‘dead zones’, while oil and other pollutants can have disastrous consequences for ecosystems. The potential threat of non-physical pollution is also emerging; sound from shipping and other activities has the potential to interfere with animal communication.
