Nonlinear photonics is an area of optics that deals with exploiting the optical nonlinearities of materials to induce new phenomena and achieve novel functions. It studies the nonlinear response of parameters such as frequency, polarisation, phase, or path of incident light in order to achieve nonlinear processes like second (and higher order) harmonic generation, sum/difference frequency generation, and spontaneous parametric down conversion, among others. These nonlinear interactions are fundamental in a variety of applications including tuneable laser sources over a broad range of spectral wavelengths and entangled photon pair sources for quantum information technologies.
