This collection of highlights gives a taste of the innovative research that scientists at Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) are conducting. The collection is published in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Russian university. The research featured in the collection covers areas as diverse as an optical transistor that can be switched by a single photon, the elastic strain engineering of diamond nanoneedles, novel batteries for renewable-energy microgrids, the use of artificial intelligence to curb greenhouse emissions, and the tracking of mutations of the virus that causes COVID-19. It also includes a foreword by the university’s president, Alexander Kuleshov.
This collection of articles from Nature Portfolio is produced with support from the Skoltech Institute of Science and Technology. The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology retains sole responsibility for the selection of articles.
Machine learning algorithms predict how strains can unlock extraordinary transformations, including one that makes nanoscale needles of diamonds electrically conducting.
