Editor's choice: shift work

Shift work is an integral part of today’s 24/7 society and shift workers are estimated to comprise at least a fifth of the current global workforce. Irregular work times outside of the traditional diurnal or ‘day’ hours can disrupt the habitual sleep-wake cycle and lead to misalignment of the endogenous circadian pacemaker, with negative consequences on health and wellbeing. This collection brings together some of our recent work on the potential cognitive, behavioural and physiological impacts of shift work.
