So, you want to publish an article in BDJ Student?

Great! To help your submission go as smoothly as possible, here’s a handy checklist to consider before you get started. You might also find our FAQs really helpful.

Have you checked recent copies of the publication to see if your idea has already been covered?
If so you might want to think about a different way to approach the topic.

To increase the chances of your submission being accepted, make sure you can put a tick next to these criteria:

  • Your piece is a Word document
  • Dictionary is English (UK)
  • Your referencing is in Vancouver format – more on that can be found in our FAQs below
  • Images are high resolution, attached as separate files and you have credit/permission to use them
  • Figures and tables should also be submitted as separate files
  • All images, figures and tables should have captions.

If your submission has multiple authors, you will need to choose one lead author.
For web purposes only, if your submission is successful, authors will also be required to submit the following details:

  • Name of university/workplace
  • Department (if relevant)
  • Postal address
  • Email address for author correspondence
  • A high-res image of themselves to accompany the piece.

Frequently asked questions

How many issues of BDJ Student are there?

There are three issues published per year:

  • Issue 1 (Winter), published in January
  • Issue 2 (Spring), published in April
  • Issue 3 (Autumn), published in September.

What are the deadlines?

Please contact the editorial office to discuss deadlines and publications.

Can I submit to BDJ Student even though I’m not a student?

Yes, you can, provided your article is relevant to the audience.

How do I submit a piece?

Who do I send the piece to?

Send it to the Editor, David Westgarth, at bdjstudent@bda.org

What’s the word count?

We work on 850 words per page including a photo of the author. Please take this into account if you are including images, figures and/or tables.

What reference system should I use?

Our reference style is the Vancouver style, and references should be numbered in the order in which they appear in the text.
We ask that reference numbers are inserted as superscripts, after punctuation. For example, '...true.4,5 Jones et al.demonstrated...’

The full list of references should give the names and initials of all authors, unless there are more than six, in which case only the first three should be given, followed by et al.

What happens after my article has been accepted?

The piece will go to the production team and a PDF proof will be generated for you to approve prior to print.
Please note the Editor-in-Chief has the final say on matters of editorial.

Will I receive a copy?

You will receive a copy of your article as PDF and a voucher copy will be sent to you in the post.
If you are a student member, you will also have access to your article online.
