Volume 224 Issue 5

The Oral Health Poster series: 'Brush the cobwebs away'

For the cover series of this volume (224) of the BDJ, we have chosen to feature oral health promotion posters of the past, taken from the BDA's extensive collection.

The image on this cover features a poster designed by leading British graphic designer Abram Games in 1945. This was one of three posters acquired by the BDA Museum in 2010 as a result of a generous financial donation from a BDA member

Games produced this poster for the War Office in the 1940s. It was to be used in army encampments rather than for civilians. In addition to posters on dental care, Games designed many other posters for use within the army during this period on topics including: guarding against careless talk, weapon handling, aircraft recognition, and the growing of food. Games produced some of Britain's most memorable images including the 'Blonde Bombshell' ATS poster of 1941 and the iconic Festival of Britain emblem.
