During phase 1, participants viewed pictures from two stimulus categories: Erotica (E) and Portraits (P). During phase 2, participants viewed partial pictures created by occluding each picture below the neck of the person. Depending on whether participants could or could not form a memory representation of the face when viewing the picture in phase 1, four categories were distinguished: Erotica-Seen (E_S), Erotica-Not Seen (E_NS), Portrait-Seen (P_S) and Portrait-Not Seen (P_NS). The right figure illustrates the counterbalancing of the picture sets.
