Cotton textiles are primary vectors for the culture and transfer of viruses and bacteria. Cotton textiles can be made antiviral or antibacterial by incorporating functional additives, such as organic compounds and metals, onto the surface of the fabric. However, such physically added antimicrobials can leach out of the textiles during wearing and washing, and fabrication remains costly.
