Decellularized extracellular matrices (ECMs) of tissues and organs can be formulated as hydrogels or patches to serve as tissue engineering scaffolds or in regenerative medicine. However, decellularized ECM biomaterials have been limited to surgically implanted patches or localized injections thus far. Now, writing in Nature Biomedical Engineering, Karen L. Christman and team developed an intravenously injectable ECM biomaterial that can target and seal injured tissue by binding to leaky microvasculature.
