Lived experiences of coercive intervention in psychosis

Black men in Canada who underwent coercive interventions during a first episode of psychosis reported feelings of loneliness and confusion, negative attitudes about prescribed medication, and police contact, according to research published in the Journal of Black Psychology. These findings suggest that psychiatric services need to be culturally adapted to better meet the needs of Black patients.

Coercive interventions, such as physical restraints and forced medication, are commonly used in psychiatric care for patients with psychotic disorders to ensure the safety of the patient and others. However, Black people are more likely to be diagnosed with psychosis, to be involuntarily admitted to a hospital by police and to experience coercive treatment compared to patients from other racial and ethnic groups.
