Population aging and sustainable farming in China

“Our prior work has highlighted that agriculture faces dual challenges of food security and environmental protection”, says corresponding author Baojing Gu. “The existence of these challenges, along with the potential growing threat to agriculture from population aging, has motivated us to investigate this issue further.”

The researchers used survey data from more than 15,000 households in rural China who cultivated crops but not livestock in 2015, 2017 and 2019. They developed a multiple regression model to explore the effects of population aging on agricultural sustainability using the variables total agricultural input, output, labor productivity, fertilizer input, manure, fertilizer loss, farmer income, farm size and machine input.
