HDAC6 score: to treat or not to treat?

Developing approaches to identify patients who may benefit from specific treatments is an important area of research. A study now defines an HDAC6 score to predict the response of patients with breast cancer to the HDAC6 inhibitor ricolinostat and characterizes its anti-tumor effects with preclinical mechanistic work and a phase 1b clinical trial.

In this issue of Nature Cancer, Zeleke et al.9 applied an HDAC6 scoring approach by defining its gene regulatory network and used it to identify patients with breast cancer who would be most likely to benefit from HDAC6 inhibition. The authors went on to characterize the effects of HDAC6 inhibition or a combination of HDAC6 inhibition and taxanes in animal models and a phase 1b clinical trial.
