Maritime ports are essential to global commerce but are also vulnerable to extreme conditions (high winds or temperatures, for example) and natural disasters (such as storms and flooding). The resulting disruptions to port activities can have economic costs that reverberate throughout the global supply chain, yet the risks and costs of such disruptions have been poorly quantified on the system level (that is, beyond the boundaries of ports themselves).
