Some deep-ocean sediments are enriched in precious metals, such as the rare earth elements and yttrium (termed REY) and scandium. The resource potential of these seabed deposits has made them a target of mining interest, especially given the growing need for critical metals to support the development of a green-energy economy. However, the source of the metals, their distribution, and concentration are yet to be fully quantified.
