Yang et al.1 have recently shown that the hypothalamus preoptic area (POA) can be stimulated via a remote source of ultrasound applied to the skull of mice or rats. The effect of this stimulation was a decrease in oxygen consumption (\(\dot{\mathrm{V}}\)O2), resulting in hypothermia and torpor in the mice, and a reduction in \(\dot{\mathrm{V}}\)O2, without torpor, in the rats. This acute and fast decline in metabolic rate replicates the long-established metabolic response in small mammals to various physiological or pharmacological stimulations of the POA, such as those produced by, but not limited to, moderate hypoxia2,3,4,5,6.
