XOR risk variants drive diabetic kidney disease

Diabetic kidney disease is influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. A study identifies risk variants in the XOR promoter that elevate its own activity in response to hyperglycaemia, which has a causative role in the onset and progression of diabetic kidney disease.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a serious and long-term complication of diabetes mellitus, which is considered a global epidemic. The cause of DKD is affected by the interaction between genetic and environmental factors1. It has been demonstrated that approximately 30% of patients with type 1 diabetes and 40% of patients with type 2 diabetes develop kidney disease2, which is suggestive of a genetic predisposition in humans. Thus, identification of risk variants that influence susceptibility to DKD will enable us to develop a better understanding of pathogenesis.
