Dynamics of electricity exchange markets

A big part of reducing emissions is to switch from other energy sources to decarbonized electricity. To make sure that the electricity supply meets demands, providers trade with each other, both in longer-term futures markets and in short-term exchanges, where power generation can be traded as little as five minutes before delivery. These markets are prone to large fluctuations — including negative prices. Now, Chengyuan Han and colleagues have analysed these price fluctuations for the European Power Exchange market, finding strong correlations on timescales shorter than 12 hours, and anticorrelations and reversion to the mean on timescales longer than 12 hours. They also find a characteristic timescale of 96 hours, which is possibly explained by the influence of weather patterns.
