Differential gene expression based on the parental origin can have a big impact on phenotype

For most genes, the parental origin of each copy of a gene makes little difference in the expression of that gene in offspring. Imprinted genes, however, are an exception. For imprinted genes, methylation of the copy of the gene inherited from one parent eliminates—or almost entirely eliminates—expression of that copy in the offspring. In these cases, the parental origin of a mutation can be a critical determinant of phenotype.
