Experts in the field met at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (UK) to discuss the role of zebrafish in advancing fundamental research and discovering therapeutic innovations.

Investigation of the zebrafish immune system, notably its development, has a rich history. More than 20 years ago, Philippe Herbomel discovered striking parallels between the development of the immune system in zebrafish and mammals1; since then, remarkable similarities have been identified between the host response against pathogenic microbes and inflammatory stimuli in zebrafish and humans2,3. Due to its small size, high fecundity, optical clarity and genetic manipulability, the zebrafish offers a number of advantages over the other vertebrate models to study infection, immunity and inflammation.
