The experimental design of the context-dependent differential fear conditioning procedure. The fear conditioning task utilized an AB(AB) renewal setup in virtual reality, which involved the presentation of two contexts (A and B; created with Max Payne software) via a 3D head-mounted display (Z800, eMagin, USA). Contexts featured a cafeteria (A) and an apartment (B). Context presentation during the fear acquisition and extinction training phases as well as the order of context presentation during the retrieval test (indicated by double arrows) was counterbalanced across participants. Breaks of 10 minutes were imposed after fear acquisition and extinction training.
