Sensitivities (units of change in the response variable for each unit of change in the predictor) were calculated by dividing the temporal contributions of the predictor (Fig. 5) by the trend of the predictors (Figs 2 and 3, Table S2). Nitrogen and sulphur refers to atmospheric deposition, and temperature to mean annual air temperature. Errors were calculated by error propagation63. NEP, GPP and Re units are g C m−2 yr−1. Bold type indicates statistically significant sensitivities.
