The authors show that at the time of zygotic genome activation (ZGA), chromosomes start segregating into A- and B-compartments. At this stage, HP1, known to be essential for early embryonic development, localizes to inactive constitutive heterochromatin, systematically overlapping with histone 3 trimethylated on lysine 9 (H3K9me3), as expected. But it can also be found within active H3K9ac-rich chromatin in the A-compartment.
