Researchers working on synaptic vesicle fusion and neurotransmitter release share their views on the most interesting developments in their field and the challenges that lie ahead.

We asked several scientists working on the mechanism of synaptic vesicle fusion and neurotransmitter release for their thoughts on any matters in the field that are still under debate; open questions, including those that attract a lot of — or not enough — attention; and anticipated technical developments that would allow them to obtain the answers. The individual responses we received are presented here, and collectively they reveal areas in which a consensus has been reached and those still waiting for definitive answers.
