Researchers have discovered two naturally occurring channelrhodopsins for potassium ion transport that can be used in optogenetic applications.

Light-controlled ion channels have been used extensively in biomedical research, especially in neuroscience, for controlling the electrical activity of cells such as neurons. Multiple ion channels have been discovered and engineered, creating a suite of tools that can be used to stimulate and inhibit activities such as neuronal firing.
