Stem cell-derived endothelial cell subtypes enable study of viral tropism.

Despite advances in methods to differentiate human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) into specific cell types, the derivation of endothelial cell (EC) subtypes such as artery or vein cells has proven difficult. Now teams at Stanford University and the Robert Koch Institute have created a roadmap for the development of human artery or vein ECs and use it to study the tropism of highly pathogenic risk-group-4 viruses.
