Recapitulating early cardiogenesis in vitro

Two independent studies describe the reproduction of early events in cardiac development in vitro.

Matthias Lutolf and his research group at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) have used embryonic organoids called gastruloids as a template to mimic early cardiogenesis (Rossi et al., 2021). They generated gastruloids from mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and then exposed them to fibroblast growth factor, ascorbic acid and vascular endothelial growth factor, a cocktail known to promote cardiogenesis.
