How computational neuroanatomy, vintage gear and fado fit together.

Tiago Ferreira, a scientist at Janelia Research Campus, collects and sometimes uses vintage cameras and microscopes. In this photo, he is tinkering with a nineteenth century field microscope. As a computational neuroanatomist, he likes to connect his present work to the storied traditions of neuroanatomy. His everyday work as a research scientist in Janelia’s MouseLight project involves using modern light microscopes and generating single-neuron reconstructions of axonal arbors in labeled brain samples. It’s not the synaptic-level resolution of electron microscopy, but, he says, it captures “how information flows from one brain area to the other at the single-cell level.”
