On 20–23 June 2023, the 10th International γδ T cell conference was held in Lisbon, Portugal, bringing together basic, translational and clinical researchers studying γδ T cells in health and disease.

The theme of exploration and navigation was established with an inspiring keynote lecture by Adrian Hayday (London, UK), who encouraged discovery outside the confines of the current dogma, as illustrated by the complementary concepts of ‘lymphoid stress surveillance’ and ‘normality sensing’1 he championed to provide a framework for understanding the non-redundant functions of γδ T cells.
