IL-17: good fear no tears

Cytokines are well-known mediators of the immune response, but, recently, pleiotropic roles in the central nervous system have started to be uncovered. It is now shown that IL-17 directly modulates fear behavior in mice.

Kipnis and colleagues first demonstrate that homeostatic IL-17a is mainly produced by γδ T cells in the external leaflet of the meninges, the dura mater. Further exploring the ontology and specificity of meningeal γδ T cells in rodents, they demonstrate that fetal-derived γδ T cells seed the meninges immediately after birth, proliferate massively during the first days of life and produce IL-17a at steady state. Comparison with splenic γδ T cells indicates that meningeal γδ T cells have a clear, independent transcriptional signature. Postnatally, their activity seems to be governed at least in part by the microbiota.
