Irreversible electroporation in radio-recurrent prostate cancer

Results from the prospective, multicentre FIRE trial, in which irreversible electroporation (IRE) was assessed as a salvage therapy for patients with radio-recurrent focal prostate cancer, were published in BJU International. The treatment was safe and showed minimal toxicity. After 12 months, 93% of patients preserved continence and 73% of patients did not show any local or systemic disease. Thus, IRE provided encouraging oncological outcomes and might be a much-needed potential alternative therapy for patients with localized prostate cancer who had not experienced any benefit with radiotherapy.
